Frequently asked questions

Q: How do I secure a booking?

A: Your creation fee is required to be paid up-front for portrait sessions. I will send you an invoice for payment and a contract will need to be signed.

Q: What days can I book my session?

A: I am a full-time photographer, which means I can be very flexible around your schedule. However, I do recommend that outdoor portraits are taken close to sunrise or sunset for the most beautiful, flattering light.

Q: Will you travel for a shoot?

A: Included in your portrait session is travel within 40kms of Brisbane CBD. Travel as far as the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, or Toowoomba is an additional $50. Travel further distances is by negotiation.

Q: What happens if the weather is bad on the day?

A: I always have a backup location in mind for bad weather, and have large umbrellas available. Photos in the rain can be magical. However, if the weather is really bad, we can reschedule.

Q: Can I buy the digital files from my shoot?

A: Watermarked low-res files suitable for social media use are supplied with print orders. High-res files are not available to purchase.

Q: Why don’t you offer digital only collections?

A: This may come as a surprise, but without frequent back-up, digital images are the least enduring of all! A CD/DVD has a lifespan of just 3-5 years, a USB 5 years at best, whereas a properly cared-for photographic print or album printed on archival quality paper using archival inks can last between 75 and 200 years! You are more likely to be able to share these with your children, grandchildren and beyond, and isn’t that the most important thing? For more information on why print still wins over digital, read this blog post.

Q: Who owns the Copyright to the images?

A: When you hire me for a session and sign the Portrait Agreement supplied, you assign Copyright to Kathy McMillan Photography for all images produced. This is a condition of me accepting the booking. Please read your agreement carefully, and the terms outlined here to ensure you understand what this means.

Q: You can Photoshop that right?

A: The creation fee includes colour corrections, light retouching (removal of temporary blemishes), removal of leads/collars for companion animal sessions (if they detract from the image), and conversion to black and white. Any additional Photoshop work such as head swapping and body modifications is $50 an hour and a quote will be provided for your request.

Q: Do you accept credit card payments?

A: Yes, credit card (not debit card) payments are available (Visa and Mastercard). Other payment options are direct debit into my business bank account or interest-free lay-by payment plan.

Q: I don’t like how I look in the images! Can we re-shoot?

A: If you want a re-shoot because you didn’t like your hair/makeup/clothes/expression, then we can certainly re-shoot and I will give you a 25% discount on the session fee if you book the re-shoot within 14 days of the the proofing gallery going live. The original subjects may only be photographed during the re-shoot.
